Congrats to Alex Preston on another great performance tonight. He absolutely nailed Falling Slowly from the movie Once.
When I heard Keith Urban‘s comments tonight, I thought back to a night last summer when I first listened to Alex’s The Light Was Already Here (see video below) as part of our 15 Seconds of Fame contest to open MixFest. I remember listening to that song four or five times in a row to make sure I had actually heard what I thought I had just heard from this unassuming kid from New Hampshire.
In case you missed it, here’s what Keith had to say about Alex tonight:
“What I love about your performances, they always hold my attention. It’s very raw. And it’s fragile. The way you sing and the way you play has a raw fragility about it and I mean that in the most complimentary way. It’s very real. You don’t ever phone it in, you’re always in the moment…man, I love your artistry.”
That’s exactly how I felt when I watched this video last summer:
I put Alex into the Top 15 finalists and featured him the very same night on the air. He made the cut to the Top 5 and performed at our special Open For MixFest showcase at Regina’s/Polcari’s in Saugus. Despite the amazing talent there that night, Alex won the whole thing, on the strength of his performances of his songs Fairy Tales and The Light Was Already Here.
Keith wasn’t the only judge who loved Alex’s performance tonight. Jennifer Lopez said “Perfect song for you. You sang it perfectly. It was beautiful.”
Harry Connick, Jr., added, “It’s just nice to see something simply stated and elegantly done. I remember the first time we saw you and I was hoping that we’d have moments like this along the way. Really proud of you, man!”
Alex is currently in the Top 11 on season 13 of the Fox talent show. Let’s VOTE and help him crack the Top 10:
